What is a surgical lamp for?

An ordinary ceiling fixture lights the room, while the surgeon needs light at one point, often deep inside the wound. A surgical light gathers it into a spot of a set size, delivers high illuminance and shows tissue colours without distortion. The beams come from many LEDs at different angles at once. When a shoulder or a head blocks some of them, the rest still reach the field, which is why the lamp is called shadowless. Mobile models help where there is no ceiling mount or when the power goes out. For examinations or minor procedures a compact examination light is enough, and it takes no space above the table.

How do you choose a shadowless surgical light?

Start with the procedures. Open abdominal surgery calls for a powerful dome with a large spot, while a dressing room or an examination room can manage with a single-dome or mobile lamp. In a large theatre a two-dome or three-dome system lights the field from several sides, so the surgeon and the assistant do not block it for each other. In the specification, look at the light spot diameter and depth of illumination next to the lux figure. Depth matters where the team works in a deep wound.

Adjustable colour temperature with a high colour rendering index helps tell tissues apart. During laparoscopy bright light makes it harder to watch the monitor, so some models have an endo mode in which the lamp is dimmed. For a ceiling installation the engineer needs to know the room height and the slab type. If your hospital has power cuts, plan a backup supply or a mobile light with a battery.

Which surgical lamps are in the Finer catalog?
